Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to create a basis for comparisons with other examples of regionalism such as the European Union, NAFTA, the African Union, or Mercosur, to name but a few. To facilitate this task, I divided the paper into the following nine subheadings: 1.) Historical Background 2.) Rationale for Regionalism/Integration, Main Developments and Expansion 3.) Legal Framework 4.) Institutions/Decision-Making 5.) Economy 6.) Security 7.) External Relations 8.) Theories 9.) Setbacks and Prospects
